USA Today, describing the Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs) on the list, said: “These are companies that have a fiduciary duty to act in their clients’ best interest at all times. They charge fees rather than sales commissions and employ investment advisor representatives (IARs) who are licensed to give financial advice.”
There were more than 32,000 RIA firms in the U.S. at the end of 2021. USA Today and Statista Inc. included 500 firms on this list. One Day In July is the sole Vermont-based financial advisory firm to be included.
USA Today went on to say: “Other types of financial firms, such as broker-dealers, earn commissions from selling you products – such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds – and only have to provide advice that’s suitable for their clients. That means the investments they recommend should not be inappropriate, but they don’t necessarily have to meet the client’s objectives. A broker-dealer can, for example, recommend investment products that could potentially be more expensive than competing products, allowing the person to earn a fee.”
This award is presented by USA Today and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The award list was announced on April 26, 2023 and can currently be viewed on the USA Today website.

Winners of VermontBiz's 2024 BOB Awards were determined by a survey of Vermont Business Magazine readers conducted from January 1 – March 1, 2024. A SmartAsset study released in September 2023 listed One Day In July among the 30 fastest growing registered investment advisory firms (RIAs) in the US.
The number of registered investment advisory firms (RIAs) has been rapidly increasing as more and more people have realized the value of working with a financial advisor who is a fiduciary on all accounts, for all clients.
SmartAsset looked at more than 1,700 RIAs for this study and ranked them based on changes in client account totals and assets under management (AUM) between 2020 and 2023.
Out of over 1,700 firms, One Day In July ranked 29th.
One Day In July started in 2016 with a single office in Burlington, Vermont. Today we have offices in New York, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania, and we service clients across the United States. As we grow, we remain committed to providing personalized service and fiduciary financial advice while helping our clients avoid the high investment fees that we often find in competitors’ portfolios. We are fee-only fiduciary financial advisors.
Firms were ranked based on changes in client account totals and assets under management (AUM) between 2020 and 2023. Firms were only considered if they had at least $500 million in AUM, had no regulatory disclosures related to disciplinary action, and offered financial planning services. SmartAsset released the list on 9/6/2023.

Referring to One Day In July, Citywire writes:
"This RIA owes its intriguing branding to the 2015 epiphany that inspired founder Dan Cunningham to open the firm. Its website explains that after learning about the volume of market gains investors miss out on due to a combination of poor decisions and high fees, ‘Dan had had enough. It was July 22, 2015, and on that one day in July, he decided this was going to change.’"
"In a December press release celebrating the firm’s crossing of $500m in AUM, Cunningham put it bluntly: ‘if you are paying 1% or more in fees, and many people are, we believe you are paying too much.’"
